Compatible (tanning lamp)

See - Equivalent (tanning lamp)

D

DHA

Dihydroxyacetone; DHA is primarily used as an ingredient in sunless tanning products and sunless spray solutions. It is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane, and by the fermentation of glycerin.

E

Equivalent (tanning lamp)

Federal and state regulations require that the lamps be replaced with the type designated by the equipment manufacturer. You also have the option to replace the lamps with a lamp thatis “compatible” or “substantially equivalent” to the labeled lamp. What does that mean?
According to FDA policy, lamps are compatible if the meet the following guidelines:
• The bed must operate the same way with the replacement lamps as it did with the labeled lamps. For example if you are re-lamping a 20 minute unit, you can not use lamps that would be intended for a 10 minute unit. These lamps would cause the unit to operate in a different manner.
• Within plus or minus 10%, the replacement lamps must produce the same amount of UVB (have the same burning power). This is to guarantee that the MED remains the same.

Erythema

Sunburn or abnormal redness of the skin due to capillary congestion

H

HID

Also known as High Intensity Discharge; A type of electrical gas-discharge lamp which produces light by means of an electric arc between tungsten electrodes housed inside a translucent or transparent fused quartz or fused alumina arc tube.

HVLP

High Volume Low Pressure - A spray delivery system commonly used for sunless applications. The spray gun itself requires a lower pressure (LP). A higher volume (HV) of air is used to aerosolise and propel the solution at lower air pressure.

I

Immediate Pigment Darkening

Immediate Pigment Darkening - The immediate darkening from a sun exposure seen in people with high levels of pigment in their skin.

Intense pulsed light

Also known as IPL; A technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes.

IPD

Immediate Pigment Darkening - The immediate darkening from a sun exposure seen in people with high levels of pigment in their skin.

IPL

Also known as Intense Pulsed Light; A technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes.

L

Laser

A device that generates an intense beam of coherent monochromatic (single color) light. Hand held laser devises are used in clinical settings for light therapies.

LED

Also known as Light Emitting Diode; A semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it.

Light Emitting Diodes

Also known as LED; A semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it.

M

MED

Minimum Erythemal Dose - The amount of UV exposure that causes the first barely noticable reddening of the skin.

Melanin

Melanin is a chemical pigment in the skin. Melanin is found in the epidermis and absorbs UV.

Melanocyte

Pigment producing cell found in the basal cell (bottom) layer of the epidermis of human skin.

Melanogenesis

The process by which new melanin pigment is created in our skin.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes skin redness and irritation. Most people with psoriasis have thick, red skin with flaky, silver-white patches called scales.

S

SAD

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is episodes of depression that occur at a certain time of the year, usually during winter.  The disorder may begin during the teen years or in early adulthood. Like other forms of depression, it occurs more often in women than in men.

SPF

The sun protection factor of a sunscreen is a laboratory measure of the effectiveness of sunscreen — the higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against UV-B

W

Wavelength
