A major part of what you need to do to start a tanning business is the same as starting any business venture.  It consists of planning, forming the legal structure, organizing business operations and marketting the products and services.

Planning includes:

  • Researching the market.
  • Developing business objectives and writing a business plan.
  • Indentifying how you will fund the venture.

Forming the business includes:

  • Selecting an appropriate business structure, location and name.
  • Formal (Legal) Registration.
  • Getting necessary licenses and permits.
  • Getting tax ids and setting up to pay taxes.

Organizing Operations includes:

  • Bank account and Merchant (credit card) Services.
  • Establishing Your Brand / trade name.
  • Finding and preparing a location, as needed.
  • Developing Online presence.
  • Getting Business Insurance and Workers Compensation.
  • Appointment System / Business Management Software.
  • Customer and financial record keeping.

There are firms offer services like legal registration but you should do the planning and decision making on your own.

Online resources and training courses are available to guide through the steps involved.

Tanning business specific actions include:
  • Learning about and compliance with any tanning regulations and registration requirements in your area.
  • Training in any service you plan to offer; including UV tanning and spray tanning certifications.
  • Identifying equipment and supplies required; acquire what is needed.
  • Identifying skincare and other retail products; acquire what is needed.
